The NC Triangle Affiliate of the Komen for the Cure began in 1996 with the vision of several individuals in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. That year, the Foundation granted the right to host a Komen Race for the Cure® in Raleigh and the Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure® was born. The founding Race Chair was Jeanne Peck.
The first Race was held on June 7, 1997 with 2,600 individuals participating. It raised $87,000 with 75 percent of the net proceeds staying in the area to fund grants to local non-profit organizations, academic institutions and health departments for innovative projects advancing the local mission to eradicate breast cancer through education, screening and treatment programs.
In 2000, the NC Triangle Affiliate Board of Directors formed with 10 founding members, and Jeanne Peck served as president until 2003. During those years, the organization created several key committees, including Grants and Education.
In 2004, the Affiliate hired an Executive Director and Executive Assistant. The staff now includes a Director of Grants & Education and a Director of Development & Communications. The Komen NC Triangle Affiliate now raises close to $2 million a year to support research, education, screening, treatment and post-diagnosis services.
Through the strong and dedicated efforts of a growing network of more than 250 year-round volunteers, more than 500 ‘day-of’ volunteers, event participants, sponsors and individual donors, the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate has granted more than $5 million to local organizations since 1997 and has contributed close to $2 million to the Komen Award and Research Grant Program.
