Grants

The NC Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure funds a variety of community-based breast health and breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support projects for the medically underserved as well as post-diagnosis programs for persons affected by breast cancer. In addition to funding programs across our thirteen county service area, the Affiliate also offers workshops on grant writing and evaluation, collaboration and networking opportunities for grantees, as well as support for funded organizations through the grant cycle.

Since the first Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure®, held in June 1997, the Komen NC Triangle has provided more than $8 million in grants to many of the service providers in our 13-county service area. These counties are Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance and Wake counties. In 2009, the Triangle Affiliate funded more than 22 Local Outreach Programs and Initiatives totaling approximately $1.2 million.

Jun 22, 2009 Oncotype DX® and Clinical Characteristics Influence Chemotherapy Decisions in Early Breast Cancer

According to research conducted at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, among women with early breast cancer who underwent testing with Oncotype DX®, decisions about the need for chemotherapy were influenced by the Oncotype DX recurrence score as well as by the size and grade of the cancer. These results were presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Jun 15, 2009 Denosumab Provides Bone Benefits in Prostate and Breast Cancer

Among prostate patients treated with androgen deprivation therapy, the investigational drug denosumab increases bone density and reduces the risk of fractures. Denosumab also improves bone density in breast cancer patients treated with aromatase inhibitors. These were the results of two studies presented at the 2009 annual meeting the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Jun 10, 2009 Partial Breast Irradiation Appears Safe and Feasible for Early Breast Cancer

Partial breast irradiation (PBI) appears to produce the same overall survival results as whole-breast radiation (WBRT) in women with early-stage breast cancer; however, more research will be necessary before this investigational treatment replaces WBRT as the standard of care in this patient group. The results of this study were presented at the 2009 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Orlando, Florida.
