2010 - 2011 Grant Recipients

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise: To save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

The NC Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure funds a variety of community-based breast health and breast cancer screening, treatment, education and support projects for the medically underserved as well as post-diagnosis programs for persons affected by breast cancer. In addition to funding programs across our 19 county service area, the Affiliate also offers workshops on grant writing and evaluation, collaboration and networking opportunities for grantees, as well as support for funded organizations through the grant cycle.

The Komen NC Triangle Affiliate is pleased to award $1.18 million in grant funding in 2010 to the following organizations:

Awarded Grants 2010

1. Caring Community Foundation-Pay It Forward: Provides under and uninsured women with financial assistance to defer out of pocket expenses for low-income, underinsured women across the 13 county service area. Contact Diane Boswell at 919-414-0000.

2. Caswell Family Medical Center-Mobile Screening Mammography Services: Partners with local mobile mammography program to increase access to breast health services for underserved residents of Caswell County which currently has no mammogram services in the county. 3. Community Health Coalition:  Sisterhood Project – Phase III: Serving underserved women in Durham County; Addresses breast health needs through education, screening, health communications, transportation services and peer support programs. Contact Sharon Baker at 919-470-8680Nash County Health Department-Mammograms for Life: Provides breast cancer awareness/education and screening to low income, underinsured residents of Nash County. 4. Crossworks: Breaking Free!: Delivers breast health/cancer education and screening referrals for under/uninsured women through outreach to hair salons, churches, local business and the community in Edgecombe, Franklin, and Nash Counties. Contact Debra Long or Lisa Quarles at 252-446-6964.

5. Duke Breast Wellness Clinic: Program provides Patient Navigation, free clinic services, and breast MRIs for high risk women in Durham County.  Contact Vicky Seewaldt or Stephanie Robertson at 919-668-2454.

6. Edgecombe County Health Dept.-Breast Initiative: Provides mammograms and early detection education for under/uninsured women in Edgecombe County. Contact Michelle Etheridge at 252-641-7526.

7. El Centro Hispano-La Damas de Rosa / The Pink Ladies: Using Lay Health Advisors in the Latino community, this program serves the low-income, under/uninsured Hispanic women in Durham County. Contact Maritza Chirinos at 919-687-4685.

8. El Pueblo:  Comunidad Sana targets low income Latino women in 13 counties; This program provides one-on-one counseling, group support, transportation; support post treatment and patient navigation. Contact Florence Siman at 919-835-1525.

9. El Pueblo:  Hazlo por tu Familia offers group education sessions, child care, transportation, and screening to underserved residents of Chatham County. Contact Florence Siman at 919-835-1525.

10. Harnett Department of Public Health:  Mammography Outreach Program: Programs outreach programming via hair Salons, churches, public housing, and Mammography services with the Rex Mobile Mammography unit. Contact Debra Hawkins at 910-893-7550.

11. Johnston County Public Health Department: Supports the Johnston county free breast cancer screening program by providing breast cancer education outreach awareness for 170 women in the county. Contact: Leah Thorndyke at 919-989-5200.

12. Lincoln Community Health Center: Screening and 820 in community outreach.  Delivers outreach, mammography services, client reminders, and support groups to the medically underserved in Durham County. Contact LaSonya Little at 919-956.4029.

13. Nash County Health Department: Provides culturally appropriate outreach, and screening for uninsured and underinsured women in Nash County. Contact Karen Ramsey at 252-459-1356.

14. Piedmont Health-Project Access-Chatham: Provides breast cancer education, clinical breast exams, mammography, and patient navigation for underserved women in Chatham County. Contact: Marni Holder at 919.537.7497.

15. Piedmont Health- Project Access –Orange and Caswell: Provides breast exams for under and uninsured women in Orange County with follow-up mechanisms. Contact: Marni Holder at 919.537.7497.

16. Rex Healthcare Foundation:  Mammography Program: Provides breast cancer screening and follow-up to underserved women in 11 counties using a mobile mammography unit. Contact Kelly Poe-Jones at 919-784-4443.

17. Rural Health Group: Every Woman: Program utilizes lay health advisors and patient navigators to support the breast cancer/health needs of Vance, Nash and Edgecombe counties. Contact Patricia Peele at 252-536-5829.

18. UNC - Genetic Testing partners with the UNC Hospital system to provide genetic testing for patients in Durham, Orange, Wake and Chatham Counties. Contact Cecile Skrzynia at 919-966-9437.

19. UNC - "Get Real and Heal” provides psychological and physical healing therapy for women after breast cancer surgery.  Contact Diane Groff or Claudio Battaglini at 919-962-0534.

20. UNC - Partnership for Breast Health: This program provides breast health education and referral to women with disabilities in Durham, Franklin, Johnston, Wake counties. Contact: Pam Dickens at 919.966-0881.

21. Wake Human Services-Educate our Women (EOW): Provides screening, outreach/diagnostics services for underinsured and uninsured women in Wake County. Contact Lidia Tiller at 919-250-4731.

22. YWCA: Encore Plus: Partnering with Rex Mobile Mammography unit and Raleigh Radiology this program Provides breast health education and screening, transportation, and faith based outreach, to women in Franklin, Johnston and Wake counties.  Contact Kerry Waite at 919-828-3205.
