The Komen NC Triangle Affiliate awards a variety of small grants to support activities relating to breast health and breast cancer that would not normally qualify for our STEP grant program. The maximum award for such grants depends on the nature of the proposal. The following guidelines describe the program in detail.
Deadlines
Program Support Grants and Conference Grants will be accepted four (4) times a year on April 1, August 1, October 1 and December 1. Travel Grants will be accepted no later than six (6) weeks prior to the date of travel. Such applications will be considered by the Board of Directors upon a recommendation from the Screening Committee as appointed by the President of the Board.

• Applicant must be a 501(c) 3 organization (non-profit organization, educational institution and/or government agency) and provide proof of non-profit status if it is not already on file with the NC Triangle Affiliate. Checks cannot be issued to individuals; they must be issued to the 501 (c) 3 organization.
• Applicant must be operating within the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate’s 13-county service area, and funded activities (except travel) must take place within the service area: Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance and Wake counties.
• Funding requests should not be for a project that would normally be eligible for funding through the yearly peer-reviewed Komen Grant process (Screening Treatment Education Program / STEP grants). If you have any questions, please contact Tammy Rowland, Director of Grants & Education
• Funded activities must be consistent with and specific to the Komen mission
• Organizations that currently have Komen STEP Grants or other Small Grants are eligible for funding, within the restrictions outlined below.
• Grant applicants are restricted to a maximum combined award of $5,000 per fiscal year (April 1 – March 31), per program for any type of Small Grant (Travel, Conference and/or Program Support Grant). Travel Grants are limited to two per year, per program.
Program Support Grants
PURPOSE: to promote the mission of the Foundation and increase the capacity of effective breast health programs.
FUNDING: requests up to $5,000.
USE: to cover unexpected costs associated with projects that have limited funding, to support small projects or to support the purchase of educational materials; funds not intended to support fundraising, salary, services for an individual (e.g., mammography, ultrasound), or development of materials for breast health/cancer projects (that is the purpose of our larger, peer-reviewed STEP grants).
Travel Scholarships
PURPOSE: to provide travel assistance to grantees, health care professionals and advocates to attend, participate in and/or present at meetings, conferences or symposia that would increase the community knowledge of breast health and breast cancer and facilitate the exchange of ideas and communication between the scientific and lay public.
FUNDING: up to $1,000 domestic or $2,000 international.
FORMAT: these scholarships, once approved, are offered as reimbursements after travel is complete and report is submitted along with a reimbursement request and receipts.
REQUIREMENT: must attend majority of conference or apply for the continuing education credits offered AND be able to quantify participation and benefit to community.
ADDITIONAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Two letters of support/recommendation for your participation in this conference
Conference Grants
PURPOSE: to further the Komen mission by supporting local scientific or educational conferences, symposia and meetings, with an emphasis on those that enhance the interaction between the advocate, healthcare and scientific communities. The content must focus on breast health or aim to help further the body of knowledge related to research, diagnosis, treatment, education, and/or other issues related to breast cancer.
FUNDING: up to $2,500.
SPECIAL NOTE: organizers should provide complimentary registration for at least two (2) Affiliate representatives and an Affiliate display area where appropriate.
ADDITIONAL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Anticipated number of participants, description of target participants, description of conference format including specific topics to be covered and speakers, if known.
Application Format
Applications may be submitted in letter form but must include the information listed below, not to exceed 2 pages. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Additional information required is listed under appropriate sections above:
• Name and full contact information for 501 (c) 3 organization to which check should be delivered.
• Proof of 501 (c) 3 status for organization if not already on file with the NC Triangle Affiliate
• Name, address, e-mail, phone and fax number for primary contact individual
• Short description of the program or activity, including purpose and objectives
• Clear statement of how program or activity relates to (1) Komen’s mission and (2) any larger program of which it is a part
• List of other participating organizations, if applicable
• Dates and / or anticipated timeline
• Brief but concise description of how the requested funds will be spent (e.g., brief budget with justification). If Komen grant will supplement other funding, describe specifically what Komen grant will cover.

Processing
Applicants should allow 4-6 weeks for review. Expectations of a shorter turn-around time should be discussed with the Komen NC Triangle Director of Grants & Education. Once approved, the applicant will be required to sign a contract prior to receiving funds. Any changes to the proposed program, including changes in personnel or budget, must be approved in writing by the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate.

All grantees must acknowledge NC Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in all published documents relating to funded activity. A final report will be within three months of the project completion, not to exceed 12 months after the contract date and will include a summary of goals achieved, benefit of program to the community and expenditure of funds. A form and deadlines will be provided when funds are awarded. Unspent funds must be returned to the NC Triangle Affiliate.
