Overview

The vision of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a world without breast cancer. Komen Affiliates represent one of the nation’s largest private funding sources for breast health and breast cancer education, treatment support, screening and post-diagnosis programs.

The NC Triangle Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, solicits grant proposals for innovative programs in the areas of breast health and breast cancer education, treatment support, screening and post-diagnosis programs targeting services not otherwise available to medically underserved populations of the Affiliate service area: Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance and Wake Counties in North Carolina.

Community Profile

To ensure that local grant funds are being invested where they are most needed, each Affiliate of Komen for the Cure performs an exhaustive study of its service area every two years. The findings of this document are the foundation for the Affiliate’s Statement of Need and Request for Proposals. Prospective Applicants are strongly urged to review the Community Profile. The entire document can be downloaded via the “Our Community” link at left.

Request for Proposals

The Request for Proposals (RFP) for Komen NC Triangle STEP Grants is published on this website and is e-mailed to organizations that have asked to be on our RFP mailing list. The RFP is built around the Affiliate’s Statement of Need which conveys the guidelines for the types of programs Komen and the Affiliate are willing to fund. The Statement of Need and RFP are both based on findings from the bi-annual Community Profile. The Statement of Need is included as part of the RFP.

The RFP also sets the rules for applying for Komen Affiliate grants, including deliverables under the grant contract, evaluation criteria, grants structure and budget and other qualifying guidelines that must be met before the proposal is sent to review.

RFP Mailing List

We will provide the Request for Proposals, instruction for applications, and templates that constitute the entire Application package. Please Check back this July for an updated Request for Proposal for next year’s grant cycle. To be added to the contact list for the annual RFP, please use the “RFP Mailing List” form at left.

Grant Proposal Writing Workshops

The Komen NC Triangle Affiliate will offer an opportunity for prospective applicants to attend a workshop on preparing a grant proposal and designing an evaluation tool for the proposed program. Please use the link at left for details.

Proposal Submission

Proposals for Affiliate STEP grants are accepted annually in November. Proposals must be based on and follow the guidelines of the RFP. Any proposals that do not meet the guidelines will not be considered for funding.

Proposal Review

In January, a merit review is performed by an independent Review Committee that includes members of the medical and health services community and breast cancer survivors. Review committee members are nominated by the Affiliate Board of Directors and Grants Committee and typically number between 10 and 15.

The reviewers rate proposals based on a number of criteria which are closely aligned with the Statement of Need and Request for Proposals. A ranked slate is presented to the Affiliate Board of Directors. The Affiliate Board sets the amount available for funding, based on the fundraising efforts of the previous year.

Superior proposals are funded based on ranking and funds available. Applicants are notified by March 31 as to the status of their applications.

Orientation/Reception for Funded Proposals

Applicants whose proposals are not funded receive a letter that includes comments from reviewers. The Affiliate holds an orientation prior to the beginning of the funding year to share information about Komen and the grants process to help grantees meet their deliverables. After orientation, there is a reception to honor the grantees and distribute checks. Grantees receive half their funding at the orientation; they receive the second half after a successful 6-month report.
