Every two years, each Komen for the Cure Affiliate does a comprehensive study of its service area. The documents below constitute an exhaustive Community Profile that was initiated in 2006 by the NC Triangle Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure to identify resources and needs related to breast health and breast cancer in the 13-county service area. Using guidelines set by the Komen for the Cure, a Community Profile strives to answer the following questions:
• What are the demographics of women living in the service area?
• How does breast cancer impact women living in the service area?
• What kinds of breast health and breast cancer services are currently available?
• What knowledge, attitudes, and cultural factors impact utilization of breast health services?
• What health care system issues impact utilization of breast health services?
• What are the needs related to breast health services?
• Where are the gaps between needs and resources?
Recommendations from the Community Profile are used by the Affiliate Grants Program to solicit and select applications for programs that provide needed breast health and breast cancer services in the Komen NC Triangle Affiliate service area. Additionally, the Affiliate uses information collected during this assessment process to develop yearly strategic planning goals and to support the initiation of educational and outreach efforts. Finally, recommendations from the assessment guide public policy and advocacy efforts by the Affiliate.
