2008 Race Volunteer Task Descriptions

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 2008 Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure. Volunteer sign up is available through May 9. After that date, we will be happy to accept volunteers on an as-needed basis. Assignments are made first-come, first-served. Below is a list of job descriptions. Please review this list and select the positions that seem most appropriate for you.

  • Communications - Media - Stationed near the stage; make sure that all celebrity guests are at the stage when needed; also, follow along with the script and make sure that people are leaving and entering the stage on time. Adults only.

  • Decorations - Balloons set up - required start time 5:30am.

  • Development - Expo/Sponsor Helpers - Work with sponsorship tables in Race Town and assist in staffing sponsor tables as needed. Adults only.

  • Event Planning - Survivor Breakfast/VIP - Assist with survivor breakfast, serving, replenishing and clean-up. Monitor who enters breakfast.

  • Food - Assist in handing out food bags to participants as they exit the finish corral.

  • General Setup - Work before Team storefront and day before race to help with general setup. Provide assistance as needed.

  • KidZone - Assist with the set up and management of the KidZone area.

  • Little Road Runners - Assist with the set up and management of the Little Road Runners area.

  • One Mile - Assist with the set up of the One Mile Fun Walk; course monitors to provide direction; start and finish line assistance; handing out water on the course and at the finish line; and cheering on the walkers!

  • Operations - Clean-up/Take-down - Provide assistance with clean up and take down of the race area once all races are complete. Willingness to help pick up trash. This is a good volunteer opportunity for those who want to run too!

  • Operations - Course Monitors - Stand along race route and direct runners while also cheering them on. Must be able to be outside on your feet for the duration of the race. Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Operations - Grunt Crew /Anything - Work with the Operations director for the duration of the Race, providing assistance as needed. A great job for those who like to keep moving! Erect start line scaffold & position at start area.

  • Operations - Split Timers - Stationed along the race course; let runners know as they go pass that they have passed the 1-mile mark, 2-mile mark, and halfway mark. Call out race time. Adults only.

  • Operations - Start Line/Finish Line - Start line—ensure runners / walkers are positioned correctly. Finish line—assist runners as needed, keep traffic moving through finish corral. Retrieve timing chips from runners, competitive races only. Minimum age 15 required.

  • Operations - Water-On-course Station / Finish Line - Hand out cups of water; collect cups on course. Hand out water at bus lines. Hand out bottles of water at the finish line.

  • Registration - Team Bibber - Assign Bibs to Team Participants at Store Front. Complete requested information on the registration form for each participant on the team. Assure each is signed. Print the participants name and tee shirt size on the back of the bib. Send all of bibs for one team together to the Team Box Builders.

  • Registration - Team Cashier #1 - Handles Team Money at Store Front. Review Team worksheet and entry forms. Works with Team Cashier #2. Training is required.

  • Registration - Team Cashier #2 - Review Entry Form at Store Front. Review each entry form to confirm that all of the information is accurate and complete. Works with Team Cashier #1. Training is required.

  • Registration - Individual Registration Cashier #1 - Handles Money. Works with cashier #2 to process walk-in entries at Store Front, Packet Pick Up (PPU) sites & race day. Works with Cashier #2 to complete the left side of the registration summary form. Training is required.

  • Registration - Individual Registration Cashier #2 - Assigns Bibs. Works with cashier #1 to process walk-in entries at Store Front, Packet Pick Up (PPU) sites & race day. Confirms registration information with the participant. Works with Cashier #1 to complete the left side of the registration summary form. Training is required.

  • Registration - Pre-Registration Bibber - Works at Packet Pick Up (PPU) events and race day to give pre-registered participants their bibs. Direct participants to other stations (t-shirts, donations, problem solving-as needed).

  • Registration - Courier - Transports documents/materials/messages between stations at Storefront, Packet Pick Up sites and on Race Day.

  • Registration - Greeter - Greets participants and assists them with completing registration forms and directs them through the registration process. (Storefront, Packet Pick Up, Race Day)

  • Registration - Copy Assistant - Make copies of checks and/or other documents as needed. (Storefront, Packet Pick Up & Race Day)

  • Registration - Chip Tent Volunteer - Race Day only. Assist to hand out chips to competitive participants according to bib numbers.

  • Registration - T-Shirts - Storefront: Communicate with logistics team to have all t-shirt sizes available and assist with team box building. Hand out t-shirts to participants at Packet Pick Up sites and Race Day.

  • Registration - Registration Filer - Assist with the filing of registration forms at Packet Pick Up sites and Race Day.

  • Recognition - Awards - As award winners are announced, hand awards to the Master of Ceremonies to be distributed.

  • Recognition - Survivor Pavilion - Man the Survivor pavilion, providing whatever assistance is needed for survivor events and recognition.

  • Storefront - Storefront Logistics - Box building and team checkout during team storefront.

  • Transportation - Parking - Direct Race participants to shuttle buses at the RBC Center; direct shuttle bus riders to the Race start line at Meredith College. Volunteers are needed for the RBC Center and Meredith College. Shifts are available 6:00am-9:00am and 9:00am-11:30am. Collect trash and recycle. Adults only.

  • Volunteers - Staff the volunteer tent, check in/out for Race Day volunteers, ensure waivers are complete, assign and direct volunteers as needed.
