The wives of the Carolina Hurricanes chose to become the honorary chairpersons for the 2008 Susan G. Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure because awareness can make a difference with breast cancer.
Statistics and standings are important in hockey, so when we sat in a room and heard the statistic that one in every eight women would be diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a wake-up call. It forced us to think about how that number would play out in our own personal lives. Think about the women in your life that you not only know, but love: your mother, your sisters, your daughters, your aunts, your friends. Now, think that at least one, maybe more, may be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Awareness and early detection give you the chance to talk about options and treatments, not hindsight and regret. Early detection truly does save lives.
During each NHL season, our entire organization and fan base ride the ups and downs of a roller coaster 82-game regular season. End-of-season games may feel like life-altering events, but stats like one in eight help bring us back to reality. Get Checked!
