Unlike many 5K events, the Komen Race for the Cure does not require you to raise money in order to participate—all you have to do is register. However, most of our registrants want to do whatever they can to support the cause, and we do everything we can to make that EASY!
Last year, Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure participants raised more than $700,000 in donations from friends, family, employers and other supporters, and many commented that it was as easy as sending an email! We hope to double that amount this year, so please consider participating in the Friends for the Cure program.
”I decided just to send ONE email to all
of my friends, and within 24 hours, they
had donated more than $1500!”
—2007 Race Participant
What could be easier? Our online tools allow you to support the cause with a few clicks of the mouse. Here’s how it works:
If you prefer not to use the web, then a Friends for the Cure® tracking form will available soon to help you keep track of the donations you collect. If you are part of a team, make tracking your team goals easier by adding your team name to the original form before photocopying and distributing it to all team members. Please visit our site often for the most up to date information!
As a special incentive and recognition for our particpants who go the extra mile to raise funds for the cause, we will be awarding premiums for various levels of fundraising. Some of our generous sponsors are donating gift cards to thank you for your efforts. The levels are as follows, and the specific premiums will be announced here and via e-mail.
American Airlines Tickets: One ticket will be awarded to each of the top two individual fundraisers as of June 30, 2008. Roundtrip air transportation on American Airlines or American Eagle to any destination in the contiguous US. Limit (1) ticket per household. The ticket is good for one year from Race Day.
Special Premiums: Over the course of the Spring, special premiums will be announced to honor outstanding fundraising efforts in certain areas. Stay tuned!

To answer some frequently asked questions, here are the basics for participant fundraising. Feel free to contact us with additional questions or suggestions.
To qualify for the team award for “most donations” collected, all individual fundraising sheets (and money) must be clearly marked with the name of the team. To count toward a team total, donations are due online or in person at the Affiliate Office no later than midnight, June 30, 2008. Team members can also qualify for individual premiums as long as their name is also listed on the fundraising sheet. Donations to an individual who is on a team ALSO count toward the team total.
Team Tip: Do your registration and fundraising online! If everyone on your team uses online tools, the team captain will be able to keep up with fundraising totals in real time, and your donors receive electronic receipts immediately.
Credit Card / Online: For the easiest and most secure transactions, we strongly encourage online credit card donations via the Race Registration page on this website. Not only does this ensure that donors receive receipts instantly, online transactions help to save valuable volunteer time and postage. Additionally, collecting online donations allows you to use our online tools to keep track of your fundraising progress.
Checks, Money Orders: If you prefer to collect donations in person, we still encourage you to use your online tools. You can collect checks and enter them as “offline donations” using your Race Center. Once you submit the checks to the Affiliate Office, we will confirm the transactions and they will show up on your online fundraising total. Just remember that to ensure delivery of receipts, you should collect address and, if possible, e-mail from your offline donors.
Cash: We strongly discourage you from collecting cash donations as other forms of payment are considerably more secure. However, if you do collect cash, please remember to record the name and address of the donor on your fundraising sheet to ensure delivery of a receipt.
Online donors will receive receipts immediately via e-mail. For paper donations, tax receipts will be sent to all donors who provide address information on the fundraising form. Because of the volume of transactions between April and August, tax receipts may take 8-10 weeks for delivery.
To ensure that your donors get full credit for offline donations, please use your fundraising sheet to keep track of the names, addresses and donation amounts for your supporters.
You may submit the fundraising sheet(s) and checks to the Affiliate Office at any time, and you may submit more than one over the course of the fundraising “season.”
While we will happily accept donations at any time, in order to qualify for premiums and other awards, your donations must be submitted no later than June 30, 2008.
If you are submitting one check for multiple donations, or if you are writing a check but the donation is actually from someone other than yourself, please make sure that this is clearly noted on your fundraising sheet.
’Checks can be made payable to the Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure®.
Offline donations can be delivered to Komen volunteers at one of Team Pickup or Packet Pickup locations LINK HERE OR delivered to the Komen Affiliate Office, 2314 S. Miami Blvd., Suite 154, Durham, NC 27703, during normal business hours. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery of premiums.
